Vortex 5 DLG/F3K 4 Servo Wing - Standard Layup
The Vortex 5 F3K DLG has been updated with improved aerodynamics and airfoils which allow for higher launches, better light air float, yet still excels in windy conditions even at lighter wing loadings. This Vortex 5 is the 4 wing servo version with a standard weight wing layup.
Its hard to improve on the highly successful Vortex 4 DLG, but the team at Vortex Soaring have made some significant design improvements to the airframe and aerodynamics that make the ‘5’ an even better all-around competition and sport F3K DLG.
The easy to assemble 2 piece wing now blends better with the fuselage significantly reducing parasitic drag at the joint. With a new set of foils optimized for speed and wind, the Vortex 5 now launches consistently higher than previous versions. One goal of the new sections was to have improved penetration at lower wing loadings without sacrificing high L/D glides. This allows you to fly in wind with a bit less ballast, making launching easier and a faster climb rate when circling in broken up and fast moving thermals downwind. The dihedral angle of the wing has been increased slightly as compared to the Vortex 4, to 6.75”. This change improves handling and self centering, both welcome when flying far away at altitude. With 4 wing servos, you can really customize the handling of your Vortex, and separate flaps make fast turn-arounds easier as compared to the flaperon version.
The fuselage has been redesigned with lowering drag in mind. Both the wing/fuse and elevator/fin joints have been refined to reduce drag, especially at launch speeds. The removable tail foils also got a make over, making the tail more efficient and strong. The vertical fin attaches with a hexagon conical boom connector and secured with a strip of clear tape, making transport even easier. A standard pull/spring system is used to actuate the elevator and rudder.
