The Carbonita ST F5J is an impressive design and is destined to make a huge impact on F5J and ALES (Altitude Limited Electric Soaring) contest circuits in the coming years. If there was one word to describe the Carbonita it would be 'optimized'.
Optimized construction: Carbonita’s wing is a hollow molded, full carbon layup using high end techniques and the absolute lightest spread tow carbon materials, painted in the mold for a mirror-smooth finish. Aileron and flap control surfaces are live hinged. LDS control linkages (supplied) keep drag to a minimum as nothing hangs out in the wing’s boundary layer.
Optimized handling: Carbonita’s wing is a two-piece design with a beefy yet lightweight box joiner system which keeps this necessary mass close to the model’s center of gravity compared to three-piece wing designs where joiner mass is outboard and can create inefficient yaw oscillations. The joiner is hollow molded carbon with molded-in dihedral. Carbonita’s double dihedral wing design gives the Carbonita stable, virtually hands-off handling in thermal updrafts. Flying the Carbonita is so easy you can observe the sky around you and know that when you look back, she’s where you expect her to be. Working light lift, even at low altitude, is efficient, predictable, and free of unexpected handling quirks.
Optimized drag: Carbonita’s control surfaces are generous, needing minimal deflection thus reducing drag, giving instantaneous response, and making spot landings easier to nail. A long tail boom and generous tail surfaces give rock steady, efficient tracking on your final approach.
Optimized fuselage/empennage: Carbonita’s fuselage is molded in carbon. The bellcrank for the full-flying stab factory installed. The pushrods are also installed. Carbonita has a molded carbon canopy which is fitted with a music wire, spring attachment system. Its nose is ready to receive a lightweight motor/controller setup (appropriate to F5J), but it can be cut back for a heavier setup and still achieve correct CG. Carbonita’s fin is removable for ease of transportation and also to avoid hangar rash. It just plugs into fin base on the fuselage and rudder hooks up at the same time.
The fin is molded, spread tow carbon construction, and as with the wing, the rudder is live hinged. A combination tube-and-horn design at the bottom of the rudder provides tight control with minimal drag. Carbonita’s all-moving, two-piece horizontal stabilizer is of hollow-molded, spread tow carbon construction. Carbon rods join the two halves.
